The Grapes of Roth

2007 The Grapes of Roth Riesling

Technical notes:

  • 100% Riesling
  • The aim was to allow the fruit to reflect its full character and regionality
  • 2007 was one of the best vintages in Long Island history
  • The fruit source is Split Rock Vineyard, located just east of Greenport, owned by Michael Kontokosta and managed by Long Island Veteran Charles Flat. The location on the far end of the North Fork with its pronounced maritime influence is particularly important. The cooling breeze is perfect for Riesling, preserving a lively acidity, yet allowing excellent maturation and ripening of the grapes
  • The yield was low at 2 tons per acre and the perfectly ripe grapes were carefully hand picked on October 5th 2007
  • The grapes were brought to Wolffer Estate and destemmed but not crushed. A 12 hr maceration on the skin at 38F followed, to maximize extraction of the fruit
  • The grapes were gently pressed and the juice was well settled. Fermentation was done in stainless steel starting on October 10th and was kept very cool at 59F
  • On October 26th, the wine was at perfect balance with an alcohol content of 9.8% and a residual Sugar of 14 grams per Liter- hence,  fermentation was stopped by chilling it to 33F
  • After an initial racking to separate the yeast, the wine sat on the lees till mid December and was then filtered
  • After Protein stabilization the wine was filtered and bottled in April
  • Only 270 cases of 750ml, 10 cases 375ml and 9 Magnums were bottled

Tasting notes:

  • Bright shiny golden color.
  • The nose is filled with aromas of honeysuckle and peach, with a burst of lime zest, fresh apple and a faint hint of gasoline
  • The mouth-feel starts of vibrantly with flavors of fresh fruit- peach, pear and citrus, balanced by a bright acidity that seems to dance on your tongue. There is a seamless creamy, yet juicy texture from start to finish
  • The finish is classic with ripe skin characters, lively and mouth watering acidity,  lots of slate and “salty” mineral notes, all wonderfully balanced by its natural residual sugar showing as ripe fruit and honey

Serving suggestion:

  •  This wine is perfect with fresh sea food, adding a vibrancy that enhances the flavors ·         The lively acidity and the natural residual sugar will complement the sweet/sour balance of spicy dishes (Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai, Vietnamese, etc) ·         A great wine to bring out the best of any cheese course
